KUBO GUIDELINES
KUBO GUIDELINES
Welcome to the Kubo!
At Jiu Jitsu Kubo, we believe in building a home where every practitioner grows—not only in skill but also in self-mastery and community.
By respecting ourselves, each other, and the space, we create an environment where everyone can thrive.
Please review the following guidelines to help us keep our Kubo a place of learning, respect, and unity.
1. RESPECT ABOVE ALL
Respect Your Instructor
and Peers
Bow when stepping onto and off the mat, and shake hands with your training partners and instructor at the beginning and end of each class.
We are here to support each other, and mutual respect is at the heart of that support.
Leave Ego at the Door
In many Asian cultures, removing shoes before entering a home signifies leaving behind outside concerns and coming in with respect.
Similarly, leave ego, competition, and aggression at the door. We’re here to help each other grow, not to prove anything.
Be a Teammate
Remember, no one here is your “opponent."
We are all teammates, working to build each other up.
Be mindful of your partner’s safety during drills and live sparring, and be gentle with those who are new.
2. CLEANLINESS IS ESSENTIAL
Mats and Facilities
No bare feet off the mat.
Keep the area clean by wiping your feet before stepping onto the mat.
Please avoid wearing shoes or having dirty feet in mat areas.
Personal Cleanliness
Come Prepared
Arrive clean, fresh, and ready to train. Shower with soap after class.
Clothing
Wear a clean rash guard, gi, or no-gi attire for each session.
If you’re in no-gi, wear a rash guard, spats, or shorts with no zippers or pockets.
Hygiene Check
Make sure your nails are trimmed.
If you have any questionable rashes or skin infections, please refrain from training until they are cleared.
Respect Your Kubo
Treat this space with the same love and care as your own home.
Clean up after yourself, and be considerate of others.
3. SAFETY FIRST
Tap Out, Respect the Tap
If you’re caught in a submission, tap out promptly.
If your partner taps, release immediately.
Respect your training partner’s limits, even if you’re not sure why they’re tapping.
Protect Each Other
Remember, you’re responsible for your partner’s safety as much as your own.
Practice control, particularly with newer students or those of smaller stature.
Stay Hydrated and Healthy
Make sure you’re hydrated before class, and if you’re feeling unwell, it’s best to skip training until you’re fully recovered.
This ensures the health and safety of everyone in our Kubo.
4. PUNCTUALITY AND PREPARDNESS
Arrive On Time
Please be prompt so you can participate in the warm-up and avoid disrupting class.
Arriving a few minutes early is ideal.
Preparation
Come mentally prepared for focus and effort.
This is a time to step away from distractions and commit fully to learning.
5. MAT ETIQUETTE
Positive Energy Only
This is a place of growth and focus, so keep non-training-related topics like politics or unrelated debates off the mats.
Be Gracious in All Outcomes
Whether you “win” or “lose” in training, take every moment as an opportunity to learn and grow.
Gratitude, humility, and a willingness to learn from every experience are hallmarks of true mastery.
Thank you!
Thank you for helping us build a community where each person feels safe, respected, and supported.
We’re honored to have you as part of the Jiu Jitsu Kubo family.
Let’s make our journey together one of growth, resilience, and respect!
